Goodbye 2013!

As I look back at 2013, I just can’t stop wondering where this year has gone…

As usual, resolutions were forgotten and the blog got overlooked.

So here’s to 2014 – the blogging year for Miss R!

See you on the other side!

Feeling the love : ILILC – the BEST CPD event ever for MFL teachers

All I can say is WOW!

My brain is buzzing and for very good reasons! I spent last weekend in very good company: friends, old and new, talking about languages and technology, laughing (loads of it), silliness (if I could only mention one name, it would be @elvisrunner, queen of the silliness!).

But guess what?! We were actually WORKING! Yes, I kid you not, we were all attending ILILC (ICT and Languages Conference), an incredible CPD event with keynotes, workshops and talks about using technology to enhance language learning.

I have enough material to write many a blog post on different topics discussed this weekend but need to process my notes a bit more to share them with you. Hopefully it won’t be too long! So watch out for posts on Ipads and animation apps, Tarsia, Numeracy in MFL teaching, and International links amongst other things!

Bonne année 2013!

See, I did say I was rubbish at keeping a blog! Ok, I’ve been busy looking after my beautiful baby daughter but still I feel bad about not keeping up the posts.

So, whilst wishing you a very Happy New Year for 2013, I shall make one of my resolutions for the new year: regularly writing on my blog… Maybe not every day but at least once a week. I will soon be back to work and I will need reminders of these maybe great ideas I’ve thought of or come across.

All the best for 2013,

Miss R

Listening skills – Doki descubre… mezclando colores

I have been inspired by these little cartoons, I must say. So before I forget (baby brain, quand tu nous tiens!), here is a document to go with the video Doki descubre – mezclando colores. It is just an outline of activities which could be done with the video, along with the transcript. I will try to put things together as soon as I can so watch this space!

Developing Listening Skills

The other day on Twitter, I was following with great interest the #SLTchat about intervention strategies for Year 11s. A thought that really struck a chord with me was that maybe it was too late to intervene in Year 11, that indeed should we start further down the road, learners would be better equipped to face GCSEs and A-Levels.

As KS3 coordinator for MFL, I think it is essential I work on this aspect with my department. Actually, we have already started by incorporating phonics into our scheme of work in a bid to improve speaking skills and confidence (note for self: this is another post idea!).

Language learners find Listening daunting. Why? Speed: Too fast is usually what they say.  Content: Too many unknown words? Wanting to understand every single word? Clarity?

So, as a teacher, what shall I do to help my learners? As a KS coordinator, what can I have in place in schemes of work throughout the years to build learners’ confidence up?

Starting in Year 7 when they are full of enthusiasm and still receptive to silly videos and songs is essential in my opinion.

Whilst tidying up my hard drive, I found a link to a cute little video which took me to a whole series called Doki descubre. Videos are about a minute long and there is a range of topics covered (from food to planets).

Watching the videos, some ideas popped in my mind: listening for key words, how many times can you hear…?, can you recognise any other words? As they are very short clips, you could easy play them several times (sound only, picture only etc). Brilliant as starters or plenaries, don’t you think?

Off I go to incorporate them into our schemes of work… Well, I should really have a nap first. It’s half term after all!

Hello world!

I have been a secondary teacher for the last 7 years and, although I feel I have come a long way since my PGCE, I believe I need to reflect more on my teaching and most importantly on the learning that takes place in my classroom.

I have followed many colleagues and friends on their journeys through MFL teaching by reading their blogs and it has been an incredible source of inspiration, advice, ideas, etc. So I think it’s time for me to take that tiny step towards sharing my views and reflections on learning and teaching in MFL.

But be patient with me please! I’m not necessarily good at remembering to post on blogs for a start and then there will soon be a little bundle of joy to look after as well… Maybe I’m taking on more than I can chew! We shall see…
